Bespoke Black Walnut Headboard
Brighton and Hove

The Design
The project began with an initial concept by Daisy at Brighton-based Day Design Interiors. From this, I developed a detailed SketchUp model to refine the proportions, construction and practical details before manufacture.
The finished design combines a full-width headboard with integrated bedside cabinets, drawers and storage, creating a single piece of furniture designed specifically for the room.
Materials and Construction
The headboard was handcrafted using a combination of solid black walnut and black walnut veneer, carefully selected to create a consistent finish across the piece.
Mitred construction was used throughout the bedside cabinetry to maintain clean lines and allow the walnut grain to flow around the furniture.
The finished piece was treated with Osmo Polyx-Oil Terra, enriching the natural colour and character of the walnut while providing a durable finish.

Lighting & Cable Management
Integrated bedside lighting formed an important part of the design, requiring the cabinetry to accommodate the electrical components while keeping cables and connections neatly concealed.
Cable management was carefully planned during manufacture, and I worked alongside the electricians throughout the project to ensure the lighting and electrical requirements could be integrated cleanly into the finished furniture.

Bespoke Furniture, Made to Measure
This project demonstrates how bespoke furniture can be designed around both the room and the way it will be used. From the black walnut cabinetry and integrated storage to the lighting and concealed cable management, every detail was considered as part of the finished design.
